Professor Anthony C Jones
Professor Anthony C Jones (BSc Chemistry 1976, PhD 1979) – Professor, Department of Chemistry and Surface Science Research Centre, University of Liverpool
A graduate and postgraduate in Chemistry, Professor Jones is an expert in the chemical technologies which lie behind the electronics and visual display of many modern devices – from traffic lights to computers, and LEDs to back-lit televisions.
Now a research professor with the University of Liverpool, where he has helped to develop chemicals used worldwide in the microelectronics industry, he is intent on inspiring the scientists of tomorrow with his passion and commitment to science.
Throughout a career marked by vision and innovation, Professor Jones’ industry peers have lined up to recognise his achievements. Epichem, the company he co-founded in 1983, received a prize in the British Technology Group’s Academic Enterprise Competition in 1985 and was granted the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement in 1990. Professor Jones himself was granted the Michael A Lunn Outstanding Contributor Award in 1996 for his research on precursors for indium phosphide and related materials. More recently, his research group at the University of Liverpool has been honoured with the Royal Society of Chemistry’s prestigious Teamwork in Innovation Award in 2005.
Between 1996 and 2000 he was chief scientist for chemicals firm Inorgtech, which he part-owned, and he has also found time to hold visiting professorships at Imperial College London and Salford University.
Passionate about developing links between universities and industry, Professor Jones has published 236 scientific papers, filed 16 patents, and has co-authored two text books on metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), ensuring his legacy will last for generations to come.
