Patricia A Troop CBE

During the course of her career, Dr Troop has covered the breadth of public health, which includes promotion of health, prevention of disease, protection of health, and preparedness and response for emergencies as well as a chief executive and non-executive director.

In health promotion, she ran one of the first food and health programmes, initiated the national ‘5 a day’ programme, was a member of the Committee on Medical Advice on nutrition and later chaired the Academy Committee for Nutrition.

For health protection, nationally she defended the use of MMR despite a major campaign against it and media onslaught, chaired the national committee for AIDS and the Committee for the Protection of Blood and Tissues

Service reviews included being a member of the Changing Childbirth which proposed woman centred care, then hosted the implementation team, reviewed all cancer service across the region, carried out a national review of Paediatric Intensive Care.

For health protection she established the Health Protection Agency, bringing together national organisations for infectious diseases, environment and health, including chemicals and radiation and emergency preparedness.

She led the development of emergency preparedness at the Department of Health, and was the lead for the response to the events of 9/11. At the Department of Health she led for International Health, working with the European Commission and WHO as well as individual countries.

Since retirement she has been on and chaired a number of Committees and until November 2015 was Vice Chairman of Cambridge United Hospitals Trust.

She has also been part of or chaired a number of reviews, both at home and internationally. These were diverse, including the global response to pandemic influenza, and investigation into deaths in a neonatal unit and food Standards Agency response to the horse meant scandal.
