What is the Manchester Day of Action?

Manchester Day of Action is our annual community volunteering project for alumni around the world. We are now accepting projects for 2024.

We need alumni like you

This year, we ask you to propose a community action project that addresses one of the United Nations sustainable development goals.

We invite projects that seek to protect our planet and help all people live in an equal world.

You can:
•    Organise a project on your own
•    Work with a local organisation or charity that needs volunteering help.

Examples of previous projects

Hong Kong – Sponsored run, in aid of Plan International’s ‘Run for Girls! Save Girls from Child Marriage’ campaign – 4 April 2023

Alumni of Manchester Business School Alumni Association and their family formed teams to participate in the 10km and 3Km ‘Run for Girls! 2023 Save Girls from Child Marriage’ event organized by Plan International Hong Kong. The funds raised this year will be used to support girls in education and promote anti-child marriage projects in Bangladesh. $11,351 HKD was raised by our alumni and family.

Hong Kong – Sponsored run, in aid of Plan International’s ‘Run for Girls! Save Girls from Child Marriage’ campaign – 4 April 2023

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Career awareness event – 30 June 2019

Inspiring orphaned children aged 12-17, our alumni in Kuala Lumpur volunteered at a career event to encourage the children to go after the career of their dreams.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - career awareness event- 30 June 2019

Paris, France – Swedish clean-up and jog – 29 June 2019

In Paris our alumni went ‘plogging’ along the Seine riverbank- a Swedish concept that combines jogging or walking with picking-up litter as you go along.

Hong Kong- ‘Press Shock-save a life – 29 June 2019

Alumni in Hong Kong learnt vital Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures and how to use Automated External Defibrillators (AED).

Baghdad, Iraq – Fundraising Dinner- 21 June 2019

Our alumni in Baghdad met up for dinner to raise money for goods, toys, and food for the local orphanage!

Sao Paulo – Children’s book collection – 15 June 2019

Alumni in Brazil gathered children’s books to donate to the Santo Andre Municipal hospital. They then visited young children on the paediatric ward to distribute them. Over 400 books were given out to these young readers.

Athens, Greece – Multisensory workshop – 21 June 2019

Teaming up with the Gialltousallous initiative, our Greek alumni took part in a multi-sensory workshop to read books and record audio books for those unable to see or read.

How to submit a project idea

When you decide on a project to organise, send us the idea using our form. Once we have approved it, we will:
•    help you while you organise it
•    ask other alumni near you to do the volunteer action.

Your project can take place on one or more days.

Tell us about your project

When you have decided on a project, please tell us about it as soon as possible.

Complete a project proposal form for us to review.

The last date you can tell us about a project is 30 September 2024.

What happens next

Once you have told us about your project, we will:
•    reply to you within five working days to confirm receipt. 
•    give you a decision as to whether your volunteering project is suitable. If it is not suitable, we will explore with you whether we can make changes.
•    help you while you organise it.
•    advertise it to alumni near you.
•    ask these alumni to register through our website.
•    ask these alumni to work with you to help you complete the project.
•    if other alumni near you have told us about a similar project, we may ask you to join their project.

The last day you can complete your community action project this year is 30 November 2024.
